Brighten photos · see into the backlight

Backlight, overcast, a room with the lights off — a dark photo almost always has the same cause: the camera metered the whole frame, while the thing you wanted to see is the darkest part of it. So the job isn't to brighten the picture; it's to lift the shadows on their own.

This page gives you two sliders: “brightness” lifts the whole frame and “contrast” pulls back the flatness that lifting leaves behind — for the great majority of “shot too dark indoors” photos, those two are enough. Note that brightness moves everything together, so a sky that was already bright gets brighter still. To lift only the dark parts and hold the highlights, press “Pro editor” for the full editor: there you have Shadows/Highlights and Exposure, where shadows own the dark areas and highlights own the brightest band, and only by setting them apart can a face be lifted while the background stays unblown. Everything is computed in your own browser; the photo is never uploaded. It is not AI fill light: where the sensor recorded nothing (pure black) there is nothing to pull out, and forcing it only pulls up noise.
