People turn a photo into something painterly mostly to print and hang it, or for an avatar. A straight photo carries too much fine detail — enlarged, it just looks busy. An oil filter merges that detail into brushstrokes: tidier from across the room, and with some texture up close.
This page has a single slider: “Brush size”, 1 to 5, which sets how coarse the strokes are — the higher the rougher — and the right side updates as you drag. The oil paint filter in the full editor's filter gallery also lets you set the number of colour levels (how far colours are merged: fewer levels means blockier, more impasto), and that same group holds Watercolor, Fresco, Underpainting, Dry Brush, Rough Pastels, Smudge Stick, Sponge, Paint Daubs and Palette Knife — one click stacks another effect, and you delete the ones you don't want from the effect stack on the right. One thing to be clear about: this is a filter algorithm, not an AI repaint — it merges pixels by fixed rules, invents nothing and changes nothing about what is in the picture.

- Is this AI repainting?
- No. It is a filter algorithm that changes how pixels are rendered by fixed rules; faces, objects and composition in the picture are never altered or replaced. For AI repainting, see the AI tools.
- Can I adjust the brush?
- On this page you set “brush”, 1 to 5 — the higher the coarser the strokes. The number of colour levels (8–40; fewer levels merges colours more and looks more like impasto) is in the filter gallery in the full editor, where the two settings are quickest tried together — and the brush there goes from 1 to 6.
- Are there other painterly styles?
