Why are there empty corners after rotating by a free angle?

Rotating a rectangle by an angle makes its bounding box bigger, and the extra area has no image in it — in the full editor those four corners are transparent. Level it with the crop tool's «Straighten» and the blank corners are trimmed for you. This page only turns in 90° steps, so it never leaves blank corners.

Photos that need turning come in two kinds: a frame grab from a vertical video lying on its side (a full 90°) and a horizon a degree or two off from shooting handheld (a nudge). The first is a question of orientation, the second of level — not the same job at all.

Turns of 90, 180 and 270 degrees only rearrange pixels — not a single pixel changes value — so there is zero quality loss. An arbitrary angle (say straightening a horizon that is off by 2.3°) requires resampling and introduces a very slight softening. That is unavoidable mathematically, but at 2–3° it is essentially invisible. Mirroring is lossless too. Everything is computed in your own browser and the image is never uploaded.
